Defying the Odds: Education and Resilience in Cameroon’s North West Region

For nearly a decade, the ongoing sociopolitical crisis has heavily disrupted everyday life across the North west and South west regions of Cameroon. Schools have faced forced closures, families have experienced massive displacements, and thousands of children have been left vulnerable to severe educational gaps. Yet, despite the deep instability, the drive to learn remains unstoppable.

At Knowledge for Children (KforC), our mission has shifted from standard development to a critical, urgent focus: maintaining educational resilience in a crisis zone.

The ACAPS Thematic Report on Cameroon highlights that the education crisis in the North West and South West regions has affected hundreds of thousands of children. In many rural communities, safe, formal classrooms are non-existent. However, education cannot wait for a crisis to end. True resilience means adapting to the immediate environment, ensuring that a child’s right to basic literacy is protected no matter the circumstances.
How KforC Protects the Future
To counter the profound impacts of the conflict, our community-based interventions focus on rapid adaptation and security:

• Grassroots Learning Spaces: Supporting community-led initiatives that allow children to gather safely and master foundational reading and writing skills.
• Psychosocial and Teacher Support: Equipping local educators with the tools needed to manage trauma, adapt lesson delivery, and provide emotional anchors for highly stressed pupils.
• Child Protection: Integrating child protection measures to shield internally displaced or vulnerable youth from immediate risks, as outlined by humanitarian updates from organizations like UNFPA Cameroon.
• Targeted Education Sponsorship: Providing essential learning materials and support to displaced children, ensuring financial hardships do not halt their basic education.

Communities Standing Together to Keep Children Learning

Knowledge for Children (KforC) is ensuring that education continues, even in times of crisis.

Education should never stop because of conflict. Through the Resilience in Education II (RiE2) Project, KforC continues to work hand in hand with communities across the Northwest Region of Cameroon to ensure that children can keep learning despite the challenges they face.

In June 2026, more than 40 community focal persons from the Jakiri Zone gathered for a project progress evaluation meeting. The meeting aimed to evaluate the implementation of Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) interventions and strengthen the capacity of community focal persons to better support children, families, and schools affected by the ongoing crisis.

Their remarkable turnout was more than just attendance—it reflected the commitment of communities to protecting children’s education and well-being. It also demonstrated the shared belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, regardless of the circumstances.

During the meeting, our Country Director expressed sincere appreciation to the focal persons and community leaders for their dedication, resilience, and selfless service. Their continuous efforts are helping children remain connected to education while providing essential psychosocial support to learners and their families.

At Knowledge for Children (KforC), we believe that education and mental well-being go hand in hand. By strengthening community-based support systems and ensuring continuity of learning, we are investing in a future where children are empowered to overcome adversity and contribute to peaceful, resilient communities.

Education is the ultimate foundation for nation-building. That is why Knowledge for Children Cameroon stands firm in keeping education alive, even amid the ongoing political crisis in Cameroon.

Imagine the cost of a broken educational system to the nation like Cameroon. Yes!! without the right education, peace becomes a far-fetched reality. When children are denied classrooms, they are given access to other things like weapons “negative creativity” they grow up believing that violence is the only solution to conflict. We cannot let that become their reality as we target one child at a time.

Education Can’t Wait: KFORC Donates Textbooks to CES Saanyaar.

Even in the toughest moments, learning finds a way.

On June 3, 2026, KFORC showed up for the pupils of CES Saanyaar with a powerful act of hope: a donation of textbooks to keep classrooms moving forward.

The handover wasn’t just a ceremony, the village council members gathered alongside other key stakeholders to witness the moment. Their message was clear and united they fully back this initiative and pledged to “put hands on deck.” Their commitment: making sure the younger generation still has access to quality education, crisis or not.

Why this matters
In challenging times, the first thing to slip is often school supplies. KFORC’s donation helps close that gap, giving pupils the tools they need to keep learning, dreaming, and building a stronger future for Saanyaar.

As part of the Resilience in Education Project, the coordination team for the Kikaikom Zone continues to make remarkable progress through ongoing book donation and sensitization activities within the community.

The turnout has been highly encouraging, and important messages on positive parenting and the value of quality education were successfully shared with parents and teachers.
